Orange

Orange UK is a mobile phone operator and internet service provider in the UK that was founded in 1994.

The company is owned by Orange SA, a subsidiary of France Telecom , who took control after a series of previous ownerships (originally owned by a consortium of British Aerospace and Hutchison).

In 1994 Orange entered the UK mobile market as the fourth entrant at a time when prices were extremely high and accessible only to business customers. Within three years the company was floated on the London Stock Exchange and by July 2007 Orange had gained 1 million customers in the UK alone. In 1999 Orange expanded its mobile services into other European markets, such as France and Spain .

The company has won numerous awards over the years and also offers Internet services and business solutions.

Orange built a reputation for technical innovation, and good customer service. But recent management decisions (driven by financial difficulties at France Telecom) have had a turnaround effect in user-growth and Orange is slipping behind in subscriber numbers.

Orange currently offer three mobile phone options, Pay-as-You-Go (PAYG), Bundle and Contract service plans.

In terms of coverage Orange claim 98% population coverage of the UK , and usually have the best call set-up and completion rates of all the networks.

Other Services offered by Orange:

  • Orange Every Phone - Diverted calls to another phone, remotely if necessary.

  • Rollover Minutes – Any minutes not used one month will roll over to the next.

  • Orange Care - Insurance against theft, loss or damage, with a replacement delivered to you within 24 hours.

  • 14 day money back guarantee

  • Conference Calls

  • RAC Traffic Alert - Up-to-date traffic reports from TrafficMaster and the RAC

  • Magic Number – Unlimited minutes to a number of your choice (must be a number with Orange ). Only on certain contract plans.

Coverage Map:

Orange uses GSM 1800 and has had a policy of installing many more base stations than its rivals. Similarly to T-Mobile they are catching up on competitors such as Vodafone and the solidity of their coverage seems great.
