Vodafone

Vodafone Group Plc is the world's leading and largest mobile telecommunications company.

The company was formed in 1984 as a subsidiary of Racal Electronics Plc. In 1991 it had fully de-merged from Racal Electronics and became an independent company, at which time it changed its name to Vodafone Group Plc.

Vodafone has a significant presence in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and the United States, which shows in its latest global customer figures – 198.6 million by the 31 December 2006, and a market value of around £86 billion (November 2006).

In the UK the regional customer base at the end of June 2000 is more than 10.77 million.

Vodafone have always been the leader in terms of UK subscriber numbers, although the margins are narrowing due to increased competition.

Other services offered by Vodafone:

  • TrafficMaster Personal Roadwatch 1800 - This device gives location specific, in car traffic reports, direct to your phone at a cost of £29.99

  • Infoline – Provides traffic, share price, stock market, BA flights and AA service information.

  • Scoot - Information and classified phone directory information of local shops and services.

  • Multi-SIM – This service allows you to have up to 10 SIMS on an account. You can ‘Nominate’ which SIM is to be ‘live’ by entering codes at the keypad. (Vodafone charges an additional monthly line rental for this service!)

Coverage Map:

Vodafone, perhaps the largest out of the UK providers, has always been the leader in terms of UK subscriber numbers and coverage. The Vodafone GSM network is mostly 900MHz, although they do have some 1800MHz bases.

Even though they are the leaders for coverage (claiming 99% population coverage), their services on the web need updating, as the slow web site makes it hard to find their coverage map.
