Samsung to launch second hard disk mobile phone

Wed, 19 Oct 2005

First, it was the digital camera that was under threat from the mobile phone, now it seems the MP3 player is too. Samsung has launched a hard disk based mobile phone that promises 3Gb of on board storage to store a plethora of MP3 files and photos.

The launch of the SPH-V7900 comes less than a year after Samsung became the first phone maker in the world to put a hard disk drive phone on the market. A 1.5Gb unit, the SPH-V5400 went on sale in December 2004.

The new mobile phone will be a CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) model with a hard disk drive that has a 3Gb capacity, twice that of previous phones and enough space for several hundred audio files or a few hours of video.

Samsung said, "The new handset also features a 2 Megapixel camera and a faster data transmission with other electronic devices such as personal computers."

The camera offers a 2 x optical zoom and TV output socket, with the main TFT LCD screen boasting QVGA (240x320 pixels) resolution.

Samsung claims users will be able to get 4.5 hours of talk time and 200 hours standby.

It measures 103 millimetres by 52 mm by 27.6 mm and weighs 165 grams.

Samsung is also preparing a hard disk based smart phone for the European market. The SGH-I300 also comes with a 3bB hard disk drive and runs on Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system.
