NTT DoCoMo, one of Japan's largest mobile operators are recalling some of their lithium ion cell phone batteries used in its third-generation handsets after warnings of problems with Sanyo's D06 mobile phone batteries as they could generate excessive heat that could short circuit the phone .
Sanyo is the second Japanese electronics maker that has had to issue major battery recalls this year.
Problems can occur if the phone is subjected to a sharp impact, such as being dropped. This can damage the electrode plate and bring it into contact with the insulator to cause a sharp rise in temperature, according to the company .
Panasonic Mobile, have also had problems which involve the P901i and other models that were sold between February 2005 and last June.
They said, "Since receiving the reports of exploding handsets, DoCoMo has been replacing batteries in the Panasonic handsets free of charge.
"This bad news is kicking the company when it's down,"said Susumu Abe, a strategist at Mito Securities Co. in Tokyo .
"This shakes trust in the company's battery products, a major profit pillar."
The two firms will recall about 1.3 million Japanese units equipped with Sanyo batteries made before June this year.
