Samsung Electronics together with Microsoft has announced the launch of the first mobile phone in Asia and Europe to use high-speed HSDPA wireless technology "Samsung Ultra Messaging i600."
The companies claim that the Samsung Ultra Messaging i600 is the world's thinnest 3G, smart phone with a full QWERTY keyboard for speedy messaging and supports Web applications such as podcasting and RSS feeds. In addition to this, the customised thumbwheel makes navigation simpler than ever.
The announcement was made in Hong Kong at ITU Telecom World 2006, a major convention for the telecommunications industry.
With two integrated digital cameras, 1.3 mega-pixels in the back and VGA in the front, the phone can also be used for 3G video calls.
Samsung Ultra Messaging i600 users can listen to stereo-quality music and view high quality video clips with Windows Media Player 10 Mobile and a Bluetooth stereo headset .
"The mobile population is increasingly looking to use one device that easily plugs into their life, both in and out of the office," said Pieter Knook, a senior vice president at Microsoft.
The Ultra Messaging i600 is comfortable to hold with a slim body and has a soft finish which gives it a good grip.
The slim, 11.8mm Windows Mobile 5.0-powered Smartphone is 3G/WCDMA/UMTS and also HSDPA capable. It has support for Bluetooth 2.0 EDR and WiFi 802.11b/g and USB, though just 1.1. The download speed is designed to be as fast as those provided by ADSL, or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, used in homes .
The Samsung's Ultra Messaging i600 will be available in Asia Pacific and Europe in first quarter 2007, prices weren't announced yet.
