Samsung has unveiled a prototype of its new memory chip, OneDRAM, which the company claims will make mobiles work five times faster.
Smart phones and other portable multimedia digital devices have separate processors for communications and media processing, such as DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) for multimedia functions and SRAM (Static Random Access Memory) for transmitting data between the processors. Samsung's project focuses on combining the two types processors so the new OneDRAM will channel data between the processors through a single chip eliminating the need to also specify DRAM and SRAM chips for buffer memory .
The 512MB, 133MHz OneDram chip is dual-ported and has a shared memory bank which enables it to increase the time that it takes to transfer data between processors. The new chip meets JEDEC low power double-data-rate (LPDDR) memory standard.
Samsung said, "OneDRAM chip can replace two memory chips and enable circuit efficiencies as well. It enables faster processing, up to five times faster, minimises control board area coverage by up to half, and can lower power consumption by 30 percent, so extending battery life."
Meanwhile, Samsung expects its OneDRAM to be introduced in mobile phones by the second half of 2007. It should also be included in games consoles and any other portable digital devices using 3D graphics .
