Laptops subsidised by T-Mobile in Germany

Fri, 03 Feb 2006

The world’s second largest network, T-Mobile, after Vodafone will be introducing a new scheme in Germany. The scheme is a bid to make data tariffs more attractive to users by bundling a 3G data card with a Fujitsu-Siements laptop.

The laptops will be subsidised by the networks so reducing the cost to the customer. The price has yet to be confirmed but experts predict it could be as low as £100. The deal will be offered on a two year contract and is set to be launched in March this year.

Douglas Ros, vice president for business development and marketing at Option, a manufacturer of 3G data cards based in Leuven, Belgium said, "Other network operators are considering adopting T-Mobile's unique marketing strategy. The demand for 3G data cards is strong and I think it will remain so over the next four or five years."

Once the service has been launched, T-Mobile will distribute the laptops with the data in-built data cards in June this year. Internet users in the UK have access to over 2000 T-Mobile hotspots nationally. With businesses continually seeking more access to email and internet while people are on the move, it is hoped that the German scheme will be in the UK within the next 12 months.
