The latest development in mobile phones is to have a digital TV service for mobiles. The venture is being put together by BT, Microsoft and Virgin Mobile.
It is expected that the venture will be confirmed at the 3GSM conference in Barcelona, which is the biggest gathering in the mobile phone industry.
The new technology is expected to be in use by summer where Virgin Mobile customers could be receiving up to five TV channels on their handsets via a BT service. BT worked with Microsoft to develop the service.
The service by Virgin Mobile TV will use the established digital audio broadcast network (DAB) in the UK offering digital radio and television.
BTs involvement is to overcome problems that other phone operators face who have streamed capacity hungry television services over their own third-generation networks.
In another development Microsoft announced a joint venture with Vodafone called Windows Mobile Email. Vodafones business users will be able to use their phones to email directly and this will be synchronised with the office-based Microsoft Outlook or Excel packages.
The service will be available in the UK, France and Germany from next month. This is likely to rival the Blackberry email service that was developed by Canadian firm Research in Motion.
