Apple's iPod which is known for its style and functionality, is one of the most successful consumer electronic brands of recent years now may be preparing to combine its iPod music player with its own mobile phone.
Apple has recently made a number of filings at the US Patent Office, which have prompted analysts to speculate that a new offering could be on the cards.
Earlier this month, Apple filed four applications for the federal trademark "Mobile Me," seeking coverage of a variety of uses, including mobile phones, personal digital assistants and digital music players.
One application specifically states "Mobile Me" would apply to "mobile telephone communications services" and "telecommunication services for the dissemination of information by mobile telephone, namely the transmission of data to mobile telephones."
The launch of such a product would come at a time when mobile phones that can be used to download, store and play music are becoming increasingly popular.
Sony Ericsson launched a Walkman phone last year specifically designed for music on the move.
Apple entered the mobile phone market in September with the unveiling of the Rokr, manufactured by Motorola Inc. that plays music purchased through Apple's popular iTunes music store.
Shaw Wu an analyst at American Technology Research said, "We believe this would be a successful strategy, given the type of content and markets Apple has had success in."
