Belkin debuts WiFi Phone for Skype

Fri, 21 Jul 2006

Belkin today unveiled its Wi-Fi Phone for Skype that lets users make free Skype calls without the need for a computer . The device offers free, unlimited domestic and international calls over the Internet to other Skype users, as well as low-cost calls to "ordinary" areas worldwide, according to Belkin.

The Belkin Wi-Fi Phone connects to Wi-Fi hotspots around the world, allowing consumers to easily access their Skype account without turning on the computer. It can be used at home, in the office, or in a free public hotspot. The Wi-Fi Phone works anywhere in the world where there is a free Wi-Fi network, also making it an ideal travelling companion.

Featuring an intuitive interface, the Belkin Wi-Fi Phone incorporates familiar Skype features and is ready to use with free wireless networks. To make a call, users can simply follow the on-screen colour menu to locate contacts and view their online availability. The Wi-Fi Phone gives users a familiar Skype experience similar to that on a computer. "With over 100 million registered users all over the world, Skype is enabling the world’s conversations," said Mike Chen, Director of Product Management. "The Belkin Wi-Fi Phone combines the cost savings and enjoyment of using Skype with the convenience of Wi-Fi, making it even easier for people to stay in touch."

The phone supports security with WPA and WPA2 with PSK, plus 802.11b/g compatibility.

The Wi-Fi Phone will launch in North America in August 200 at a suggest price of US$189.996, with launches in Asia, Europe, and Australia to follow shortly.
