Orange enters free broadband market

Thu, 01 Jun 2006

Mobile phone operator Orange is offering free broadband to customers on some mobile phone contracts .

The broadband link up is courtesy of Wanadoo, which Orange bought earlier this year. Equant and Etrali, the Internet and business-to-business arms of France Telecom are also united in the plan.

Benefits of the new service include free high-speed Internet access for Orange's pay monthly customers, as well as free calls from fixed-line to Orange mobile phones .

The company also announced it would give free high speed Internet access to UK customers spending at least £30 a month on a mobile phone contract. The customer also has to sign up to the deal for at least 18 months and have their download capability restricted to 2GB a month.

The Orange Livebox is a wireless modem that can also be used to make cheap Voice over IP calls. No extra hardware is required as an ordinary phone can be plugged into the Livebox.

An additional £6 a month buys the Orange Anytime package, with free calls at any time to UK landline numbers beginning with 01 and 02. They can also register for free calls to any Orange mobile phone.

Ordinary internet services are also available with both dial-up and broadband. The broadband service is available on a one month trial as well costing £15.

"This is the first time customers can walk in a single store get on the web simply through one order process, order their mobile, their broadband or fixed line," chief executive Sanjiv Ahuja said.

"What we are offering is something that is easy to use, simple to use and hassle free," he added.
