PayPal signs partners for mobile payments

Fri, 09 Jun 2006

PayPal has signed up five 'text to buy' partners for mobile payments in the UK . EMI, Oxfam, Twentieth Century Fox, Stuff and Maxim magazines will become the first brands to enable shoppers to instantly text and buy things, such as CDs, DVDs, and the latest gadgets and magazine subscriptions, through the new service.

This is the first mass-market mobile payments system launched by an established financial services business and is now available to mobile phone users across the UK.

The "Text to Buy" service enables customers to purchase advertised items by sending a text message containing a product code located in an advert . Items will then be delivered to addresses already saved in the buyers' PayPal accounts.

For businesses, PayPal mobile enables retailers to open a new channel to market, tapping into the firm's vast customer base.

Tom Girdham, national account manager for Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, said, "PayPal mobile payments is the first mobile service that has an established customer-base, which makes them an ideal partner for us. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment are always looking for new and innovative ways of enabling people to buy our products and mobile payments are about as easy as they come. PayPal Mobile provides us with a great way to inspire a new impulse purchase for our product and we are very much looking forward to seeing this in action."

Earlier this month HMV said it was teaming with Digital Rum, a provider of mobile CRM software, to launch its "Txt2Buy" service which allows consumers to buy CDs, DVDs and games by texting a shortcode number that appear in HMV adverts.
