O2 has announced a recall of all O2 X1 handsets due to safety concerns over the phones overheating while recharging. The O2 X1 was originally launched back in late 2003, so it's regarded as quite an old handset now.
It is recalling more than 28,000 handsets over fears that they may overheat and catch fire.
Customers are being told to post the handset back to O2, and they will receive an O2 X2i handset in exchange. The X1 was manufactured by South Korea's Maxon and was discontinued about a year ago.
Customers with the O2 X1i or O2 X1b models are not affected.
Company spokesman Simon Gordon said, "There is a product recall on this particular handset. The phone is two years old and there have been a small number of instances, three or four in which it has apparently overheated while charging.
"We are investigating. We always take matters like this very seriously and, as a precautionary measure, we are asking customers to return them," Simon said.
No one has been injured and the overheating flip phones have caused no damage.
X1 owners who continue using the faulty handsets will face a bar on all calls from the 27 March 2006.
