The popularity of mobile phones with wireless capability has helped a UK firm more than double its profits in the first three months of 2006.

CSR is the market leader in chips and devices using Bluetooth, the short-range radio link that transmits information between computers, mobile phones and their accessories.

The firm predicts the percentage of mobiles with Bluetooth will rise from 25% in 2005 to 35-40 per cent by December 2006.

"We were saying 35 percent of phones worldwide would have Bluetooth attached in 2006, we are now increasing that to be between 35 and 40 percent," Chief Executive John Scarisbrick told reporters.

"Over time we can see Bluetooth attach rates going up beyond 50 percent," he added.

In addition to phone handsets and headsets, Bluetooth also features in a host of products ranging from laptop computers and personal digital assistants (PDAs) to printers .

CSR saw pre-tax profits climb 137 per cent to £14m in the quarter to 31 March.

The Cambridge-based firm said the popularity of hands-free devices for mobiles had driven business .

It counts phone manufacturers including Nokia, Sony and Samsung among its customers while IBM, Apple and Dell are among the companies using CSR products in their computers .

CSR is also looking to increase its own spending on research and development in order to keep up with the market for wireless devices.

CEO John Scarisbrick said the overall Bluetooth market would grow by 60-70 per cent in 2006 faster than it had previously forecast.
