Samsung Unveils the World's Slimmest Mobile Phone

Thu, 11 May 2006

Samsung has been showing off two mobile handsets which it claims are the slimmest in the world.

Extremely durable and lightweight, the X820 is manufactured from fiberglass-infused plastic . Underneath, Samsung's Smart Surface Mounting Technology (SSMT) compresses features to pack in maximum functionality.

Capturing special moments with the built-in 2.0-megapixel camera, the X820 can also give presentations with an integrated document viewer. To keep consumers entertained, users can watch video with a TV-output function. Maximizing the visual experience, a horizontal widescreen layout uses a simple and user-friendly interface.

The second handset D900 is claimed to be the world's thinnest slider phone, at just 13mm and 93g.

The D900 comes with a 3-megapixel camera and includes business features such as document viewer, TV-output function, and also supports Bluetooth stereo headset (A2DP) function to enhance the user’s multimedia experience.

The D900 also boasts large, 262K colour screens, "ideal for watching streaming videos or viewing the phone’s photo book." An external microSDTM slot allows for additional storage.

"Ergonomically designed to become one with the user, Samsung's slim phones deliver the perfect harmony of comfort, simplicity and sophistication," said Kitae Lee, president of Samsung's telecommunication network business.

"Samsung's ultra-slim phones are dedicated to bringing people together. With its exceptional design and thinness, the X820 will become one with the user, one with others, and one with the world,"Lee added.

Phones have been getting steadily slimmer over the years as chipsets have shrunk and new battery technologies like lithium polymer units have allowed designers more flexibility.

The popularity of Motorola’s Razr handset has shown a strong demand for the slim, light handset.
