A California based company, Palo Alto has partnered up with Boost Mobile, to launch a new cell-phone locator service called Loopt aimed at teenagers that lets users know when their friends are nearby.
The service is free until the end of 2006 but will cost $2.99 a month thereafter.
Using the phones built-in GPS satellite technology, users can set their phones to alert them whenever their friends are within half a mile to 25 miles.
Real-time tracking will only happen if friends have agreed to be located and have provided the user with their mobile phone numbers .
A map displayed on the phones screen shows the friends as dots on a map giving options to the user to send a text-message, call the person or send them photos .
Boost Mobile's technology is similar to other technologies used in other devices that allows parents to track the location of their children .
Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of Palo Alto said, "Social behaviour really centres around mobile phones now, especially for people under 30. One of the most common text messages passed along mobile phone users is where are u? And that's what were trying to answer."
