Swedish telecom giant Ericsson and Japanese electronics maker Sony are moving their mobile phone partnership to cover mobile and broadband television services, an official with the company revealed this week.
"Sony Ericsson joint venture in the global cell phone market has worked out so well that the two companies had agreed to work together on new software to transmit mobile television services over cellular networks," Per Nordlof director of Ericssons product strategy and portfolio management said.
"We have plans", Rikko Sakaguchi, Senior Vice President of Product and Application Planning said in Malmo, Sweden, earlier in the year.
"There is a strong confidence between Ericsson and Sony after the success of the handset business and we will work to develop software that connects the gadgets in the homes with the outer world," he told journalists at a news conference.
Stockholm based Ericsson believes that to keep customers, telecom operators need to include Broadband TV in the services they offer.
"Broadband TV will be an important factor. Most telecom operators realise they will have to offer TV in order not to lose customers," Nordlof asserted.
