Two UK banks have become the first to provide banking facilities via a mobile phone .
The joint venture by First Direct and HSBC will offer a 24 hour service for customers to get their account balances and account statements. This will allow people to have access to their accounts wherever they are.
Specially designed software will have to be downloaded to the mobile phone before customers can start using the facility. Mobile phones will have to be internet enabled before downloading the software from MoniLink to their phone.
Chris Pilling, chief executive of First Direct said of the service, "The launch of MoniLink supports our drive to give customers the widest choice of ways to control their money .
"We are now the first to introduce this pioneering mobile phone banking service, which allows consumers to top up a mobile as well as check their account balance."
The service is new to the UK but it has already been established in other countries such as South Africa and Japan .
