Sony Ericsson Launches Music Download Service

Fri, 22 Sep 2006

Sony Ericsson is introducing M-Buzz, a full music download service designed for its wireless handsets . The service will initially promote new and developing artists, the handset manufacturer says.

Sony Ericsson promises that M-Buzz "will enable music fans everywhere to experience featured artists' full tracks, videos, biographies, gig schedules and other content, allowing them to check out tomorrow's stars up close and personal .

To fill the service will content, Sony Ericsson has partnered with Sony/ATV Music Publishing to gain access to a limited number of up-and-coming artists each month from the Sony/ATV roster.

"The first phones offering M-BUZZ will be the W850 and W950 Walkman phones announced earlier this year and scheduled to ship in European, Asian and Latin American markets during the second half of 2006," Sony Ericsson said in a statement.

The launch of the M-Buzz service comes on the heels of Nokia's recent purchase of Loudeye. Nokia says the Loudeye purchase will enable it to offer a more comprehensive mobile music experience that encompasses everything from devices to applications.

At launch, M-Buzz will feature a limited number of artists from Sony/ATV’s catalogue, including Kish Mauve, Embassy, Dirty Perfect, FKLV, Iggy, the Head Set, Bobby Kray, Anjulie, Lights, and Monte Rosa. Users will be charged per download, rather than on a subscription basis.

As one spokesperson, Martin Blomkvist, said, "M-Buzz is all about breaking new artists; it’s about giving tomorrow’s stars, the artists that have not yet been picked up by major record companies, the exposure they deserve, and the possibility for them to reach a wiser audience."

Sony Ericsson is attempting to turn up the heat in the mobile music phone market, however, with its Walkman phone offerings.
