Plans to cut down mobile phone roaming charges by 70 per cent were given a boost when the European Parliament voted in favour of a new law to clamp down on the astronomical charges.
Norfolk Euro MP Richard Howitt who has been campaigning to have mobile phone roaming charges reduced, called the vote as an enormous step forward to protecting mobile phone users. This particularly applies to users who use their phones abroad for business, study, or while on holiday .
A survey from 2005 confirmed that UK customers who use their phones abroad are charged extortionate roaming fees. An example is being charged £5.07 for a 4 minute call from Malta or £5.27 for receiving a four minute call from home while in Slovakia .
Mr Howitt said, "These charges are punishing people who go abroad, whether they be students, holiday makers or businessmen and they are simply unjustified . We have given mobile operators fair warnings and a fair chance to act themselves, today we are forcing action.
"Operators have been fighting tooth and nail against price cuts. At a time when international calls over the internet are practically free, it's impossible for operators to justify such a massive mark-up on international roaming.
"This vote will give everyone in Norfolk basic protection against outrageous prices, and customers can still shop-around for even better deals."
