Bee Population Declining Due To Mobile Phones

Mon, 16 Apr 2007

Scientists are claiming radiation from mobile phones could be the cause for the mysterious 'colony collapse' of bees, which could lead to massive food shortages, as the world’s harvests fail.

Their theory is that radiation given off by mobile phones and other hi-tech gadgets is a possible answer to the rapid disappearance of the bees that pollinate crops. Beekeepers have been claiming that the phenomenon has spread to Britain after starting in the US.

It is believed that the radiation interferes with bees' navigation systems, which prevents the home loving species from finding their route back to their hives .

The Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) takes place when a hive's inhabitants suddenly disappear, leaving only queens, eggs and a few immature workers at the hive, which then leads to the parasites, wildlife and other bees that would normally raid the honey and pollen, refusing to go near the abandoned hives .

CCD was first recognised as a threat last autumn in the US, with more than half of all American states now affected. Around 60 per cent of the West Coast’s bee population is thought to have been lost, along with 70 per cent of the East Coast’s population.

The disorder has spread to most of Europe and last week one of London’s biggest beekeepers, John Chapple, announced that 23 of his 40 hives have been suddenly abandoned.

CCD is alarming the world’s scientists because of its huge implications, as most of the world's crops depending on pollination by bees.

As of yet there isn’t a specific reason as to why it is happening, but there are many theories that include pesticides, global warming, mites, and GM crops, but all have drawbacks.

German research has shown that the behaviour of bees changes near power lines, and more recently a limited study at Landau University has found that bees refuse to return to their hives when mobile phones are placed nearby.

There is an ever-increasing amount of evidence of dangers that mobile phones present to the human population, but proof is still relatively low mainly due to he amount of time it takes many of the biggest perils, such as cancer to show up.

Brain tumours, decline in brain cells, reduced sperm count, and a form of RSI known as "text thumb" have all been labelled as effects of over-usage of mobile phones.
