Brits’ obsession with text messages has reached a new level, with amorous texting becoming the new craze, according to new research.
T-Mobile UK has revealed that romantic letter sending is now a thing of the past with 40 per cent of Brits cherishing mobile love messages by keeping them on their handsets, and nearly half craving for flirty texts and poems.
The study revealed that individuals in the ‘under 24’ age group are the most sentimental, with 49 per cent keeping more than 20 romantic texts on their phone, while only 16 per cent of people over the age of 45 keep the same amount.
Women (40 per cent) and under 24s (62 per cent) find it easiest to communicate feelings via text rather than face-to-face, while one in five men (19 per cent) find poetry the most romantic form of communication .
The flirtiest texts are sent by people who have been dating less than six months (82 per cent), a figure that drops significantly to 58 per cent after the couple have spent five years together.
Lysa McIntyre, Head of Beyond Voice at T-Mobile said, "Lovers clearly adore the joy of text, and every day millions of love messages are sent and received across the UK . It means romantic poetry is flourishing, even though love letters are a thing of the past, and we want to find and preserve the best in our competition to find the UK's Txt laureate."
The mobile network provider is now searching for a 'Txt laureate' – a Brit who is capable of writing an extraordinarily romantic SMS poem. T-Mobile and urban poet, Luke Wright will judge all texts (must be no longer than 160 characters) at the end of the week.
