Panic spreads over 'killer' mobile phone virus

Panic has spread across the city of Kabul, Afghanistan where rumours are rife that a deadly virus is being spread via mobile phones . The situation has got so bad that the government has had to step in and calm the public.

The result is that mobile phone users are not answering any calls where the number unknown to the recipient for the fear of being contaminated by a biological virus. Rumours are that some have already died.

An official with the Afghan Wireless Communication Company said, "Hundreds of calls were received on Monday from worried customers who had heard the rumour."

Ahmad Fawad, a shop owner in Kabul said, "Don't answer any strange number because it contains a virus that will kill you."

Mar, a taxi driver said, "There's a strange rumour that if you get a phone call from a strange number and hit 'OK' to answer the phone, blood will come from your nose and ears, and you will die." He said he was just about to turn his phone off.

Afghan officials are trying their best to calm mobile phone users who believe the rumour.

Abdullah Fahim, Health Ministry spokesman said, "We have no reports of anyone answering their telephone and then bleeding from their noses. Not today, not yesterday, and not before then - we have no such reports."

Interior Ministry spokesman Zemeri Bashary said it’s a misinformation spread by the "the enemy" to create anxiety among the public.

Bashary said, "It has no rational basis. It is not possible that through the wireless phone, a virus is transmitted to a person. The enemy wants the people to be under psychological pressure."

He added, "If found, those responsible for spreading the rumour would be arrested and prosecuted."
