Novelists who produce their work on
mobile phones are topping
bestseller lists, with a new generation of
authors writing their entire epics on the
keypad of their
handset .
The
novels have become a phenomenon in
Japan, where they are known as Keitai Shosetsu. Of the ten fiction bestsellers during the first half of 2007, five novels started life as Keitai, on average boasting
sales of 400,000.
Understandably, the novels are limited in their language, and are written primarily for a young audience. Some have become runaway successes; the most popular are dialogue heavy and written in short paragraphs.
Some writers have complained about the
mobile phone novel system, saying that the stories lack any setting or scene. The trend could allow new authors to be recognised.
