Asda
Mobile has entered the low-end
mobile phone market with its launch of a range of pay as you go (PAYG) mobile
handsets for just £5.
Over 50,000 handsets, which the
supermarket boasts is cheaper than its own-brand
toy mobile for kids, are now available in
Asda stores across the UK.
The supermarkets mobile arm has introduced four types of
Nokia and
Sagem ultra-cheap
phones which are available to customers on
Virgin,
T Mobile and
Orange tariffs .
The phones come with a free
SIM card and can be purchased without customers having to buy a top-up.
Asda trading director Peter Pritchard said: "Shoppers are increasingly turning to
PAYG as a way of controlling their spending on
mobile phones and this offer is exactly what is needed to help them do this."
The move by Asda has undercut the price of the lowest PAYG handsets available at rival supermarket
Tesco, which include an
LG phone for £9.97 and a
Motorola for £11.22, as the
retailer battles for its share of the lucrative mobile phone market .
