Nokia has announced plans to launch its first
touchscreen mobile phone, adding to the latest in and the latest rival to Apple’s
iPhone .
The move by the
mobile giant follows last week’s Evans
Data Developer Relations Conference in
California, where the firm showcased a device uncannily reminiscent of the
Apple device.
Nokia insists the product on display was not the finished article but only a demonstration of the company’s vision of a touchscreen interface.
A Nokia spokesman confirmed that the
phone, expected to be called the Nokia Tube 5800, will be launched in the next two months.
Nokia has so far refused to release details of the phone’s specifications, although reports suggest it will feature a 3.2 mega pixel
camera,
3G,
WiFi, GPS, a
TV output port, and 140MB of
memory .
The touchscreen concept phone is expected to top the iPhone for some features such as 3G connectivity, but the timing of its launch could prove crucial as any delays could see the mobile being introduced into the market at the same time as Apple’s expected 3G-successor to the iPhone .
