Low cost
airline bmi is set to become the first carrier to allow the use of
mobile phones on-board its
flights .
Trials across bmi routes will begin this month, although passengers will not be able to make
phone calls as of yet and restricted to sending
text messages only to begin with.
Texts will cost around 39p each.
However, new research by consumer group Which? has suggested that the transition to full blown in-flight
mobile phone use could prove difficult.
The survey revealed that 67 per cent of passengers would find it annoying, although 40 per cent of those surveyed indicated that they would probably use their
mobile phones on flights if allowed to do so.
Other airlines, including rival carrier
Ryanair, have signalled their intention to carry out similar in-flight trials in the coming months.
