Motorola's Mobile Phone Sales Skydive in the USA

Wed, 13 Aug 2008

Motorola is still the top seller of mobile phones in the U.S.A., with LG Electronics, RIM, Samsung and Nokia trailing behind. However, Motorola mobile phone sales decreased for the second quarter by nearly 11% in the States from twelve months ago. LG Electronics, RIM, Samsung and Nokia are close behind Motorola.

For the first time, RIM, who make the increasingly popular BlackBerry, have achieved 11% of the U.S. market share. Motorola's slight lead in mobile phone sales is mainly due to its excellent distribution network.

Motorola may be in the lead, nonetheless, Motorola needs to keep on its toes though.

In the second quarter, Motorola managed to capture nearly 26% of the U.S. market, thereby maintaining the long time prime position as top U.S. handset maker, as per a report published on August 11 by Strategy Analytics. Yet Motorola sales have decreased by 10% plus from twelve months ago, enabling LG Electronics to second them in U.S. handset sales at 21%.

Behind Motorola and LG are Samsung (18.6%), Research in Motion (10.6%) and Nokia (9.5%). RIM had particularly heartening results as they experienced the greatest growth of any mobile phone manufacturer for the last quarter.

RIM is experiencing great succes with a balanced enterprise and consumer portfolio. RIM are highly likely to experience another surge in sales when they introduce the 3G BlackBerry Bold, which entered the mobile phone markets of Germany and Austria on August 7.

The American economy is slow currently. However, U.S. handset sales will carry on defying this sloth like economy, with sales increasing by 5.3% a year on to 42 million.
