Pay as you go (PAYG) mobiles are top of many consumers Christmas wish-list this year, according to financial site FairInvestment.co.uk.
The websites claim is in response to research by moneysupermarket.com which reported a 40 per cent rise in the number of searches for PAYG handsets between October and November.
James Parker, managing director of mobile phones at the price comparison site, said: "The PAYG market has become very competitive and the host of deals on offer make them a good Christmas gift, particularly for children wanting their first phone ."
"The networks are clambering for new business, which is actually great news for consumers as there's now more value in PAYG deals than ever before."
"There has been an abundance of new PAYG deals on the market in 2008, with offers such as free access to social media websites, bundles of minutes for regular top-ups and priority tickets to gigs and events."
He added that the significant interest in PAYG services is not surprising as people continue to search for ways to minimise their outgoings during the economic downturn.
