O2 has launched a new energy efficient mobile phone charger designed to help mobile users save money by reducing their energy consumption .
With over 73 million mobile phones in the UK, the company claims its eco-friendly Universal Charger could save enough energy to reduce CO2 emissions by over 100,000 tonnes and help the nation save an estimated £30 million a year in energy bills .
The O2 Universal Charger meets US Energy Star rating guidelines for energy usage and contains a power control system that reduces the charge delivered to a mobile phone once the battery is fully charged even if it is still plugged in, avoiding energy wastage.
The charger also reduces heat loss and is compatible with three of the leading mobile phone brands.
Ronan Dunne, chief executive of O2 UK, commented: "People are becoming increasingly concerned about the impact products are having on the environment and with mobile the single biggest impact is the energy used in charging."
"The O2 Universal Charger offers customers a simple yet effective way of reducing the environmental impact of their phones and reduces the waste associated with charger disposal."
The Universal Charger is now available from O2 at a cost of £14.99 and at an introductory special rate of £7.49 if purchased with an O2 handset between now and the end of the year.
