Mobile Users Let Down By Quality Of Mobile TV Services

Wed, 20 Feb 2008

Mobile phone users keen on having mobile TV on their handsets are being put off the application by the poor quality and reliability of existing services, recent surveys have revealed.

A survey of mobile users, carried out by Tellabs, found that the number of mobile TV viewers increased by 36 per cent in Europe and North America in 2007.

However, the report also showed that the number of users giving up mobile TV increased by 68 per cent during the same period.

Quality and reliability was cited by nearly 26 per cent of ex-users as the main reason for not watching TV on their mobiles, although 60 per cent of ex-users stated they would pay to watch again if these issues were addressed and improved.

Pat Dolan, vice president for EMEA, Tellabs commented: "Users decide which new services succeed, not the industry. This necessitates network enhancements, as acceptance of high-bandwidth services depends on the quality, reliability and capacity of the mobile backhaul."

A separate study by US-based broadcaster CNN and electronics company Ericsson found 34 per cent of users ranked mobile TV as the "most in-demand application" for mobile phones, with 44 per cent set to adopt mobile TV in the next two years.

Network operators Orange and T Mobile recently announced a six month trial of mobile TV and multimedia broadcast services in London, using NextWave Wireless’ UMTS MBMS-based TDtv system.

The companies said the trial, which will run for the second half of 2008, is expected to "conclusively prove customer demand for mobile broadcast TV and radio services" .
