Omnifone Partner LG To Offer Free Mobile Music Downloads

Wed, 13 Feb 2008

Music download provider Omnifone has signed a new deal with LG to introduce what it describes as the world's first pre-licensed unlimited download mobile music phone .

The LG handset will be the first handset to incorporate MusicStation Max - an upgraded version of Omnifone’s MusicStation service for mobile phones, providing unlimited downloads, playback and the sharing of tracks, all free of charge.

The first handsets, due for UK release this summer, will be HSDPA compatible and have a touchscreen interface providing immediate access to music services.

The handset is expected to be available exclusively on the Vodafone network, with consumers required to sign up for a 12-18 month, music, voice and data plan contract .

Once the contract term has come to an end, users will be able to migrate downloads to their next MusicStation Max device.

Rob Lewis, CEO of Omnifone, said: "The new MusicStation Max handsets will give consumers the ultimate music freedom; the ability to download, discover, play and share whatever music they want, wherever they are."

The service has already signed-up the big four music labels - EMI, Universal, Sony BMG and Warner Music - with each being paid every time the track is played rather than downloaded.

In a bid to keep the labels happy, Omnifone may prevent users from sharing tracks from the phone with other devices.
