Sony Ericsson has announced plans to launch its first
Windows mobile phone by the end of the year.
The new XPERIA X1
handset will be based on the
Windows Mobile operating system, meaning that only
Nokia remain as the sole top five
mobile phone manufacturer not to offer Windows Mobile to its users.
The Finnish
company does license Microsoft
software for
music and
email, but not for the whole operating system .
Scott Horn,
marketing manager of Microsoft's mobile
business, said the company hopes to get Nokias approval to license the full system .
Sony Ericsson's stunning new Windows Mobile model - the XPERIA X1 features a QWERTY-style keyboard, a 3-inch touch screen display and interface and
Wi-Fi connectivity.
The giant mobile phone manufacturer has also unveiled six new handsets, including two additional touchscreen
phones, a
Walkman music phone with 8GB of
memory and a dust-resistant
camera phone .
The X1 handset will be available in selected markets from the second half of 2008, with Horn confident that the company can achieve its goal of at least 20 million
smartphones sales with partners by the end of Microsoft's fiscal year (the end of June).
