Apple has finally agreed to lower the price of its
iTunes downloads to match the costs charged in other European countries.
Mobile users in the
UK had been paying 79p per
iTune download, while some
music fans in the rest of
Europe were able to download the same tune for just 74p.
Some
media reports have suggested that the price of a UK iTunes download could fall to as low as 66p during the next six months.
Apple had until now been unwilling to change its download prices for the UK but following the outcome of a European
Commission inquiry sparked by complaints from consumer group Which? the
firm has now been forced to give in and level the playing field for music downloaders across the continent.
Standardised iTunes pricing has already been implemented in a total of 16 European counties, with the UK now set to join the group.
Apple argued that its prices varied as some record
companies charge it more to distribute music in the UK compared to the rest of Europe .
The
company stated it will be forced to reconsider its relationship with such record labels if this practice continues.
The
music downloads market is enjoying what has been described as a boom time, with
sales rising in each of the last three years.
