Motorola To Launch Feature Films Download Service

Tue, 10 Jun 2008

Motorola has agreed a deal with Paramount Digital Entertainment to launch a feature film service for its mobile phone customers, starting with users in the UK .

The mobile phones manufacturer is offering customers the chance to download full-length films to watch on its mobile handsets for the first time, with 40 Paramount titles being made available to begin with through Motorola's web-based store.

A collection of classics titles and newer releases will be on offer, such as The Italian Job, Mission Impossible 3, Jackass and the complete back catalogue of Star Trek films, with pricing for the downloads ranging from £5.99 to £8.99 per title.

Once downloaded to a computer hard disc users can then side load them to their phones, which will need to be compatible with OMA 2.0 and housing the H.264 (MPEG4) codec such as the new MOTO Z10.

Motorola's launch follows the introduction of movie downloads to the UK iTunes store last week. But despite Apple’s move, Motorola claims to be the first mobile manufacturer in the UK to offer full-length films.

Andrew Till, a senior director on Motorola’s multimedia team, described the mobile video market as "primed for massive growth" and said mobile users are hungry for more video and music on their phones .

"We’re expecting significant consumer interest in the movie download store, with blockbusters available from just £5.99."

"The first 40 films being made available mark a significant step change in our content strategy and we look forward to adding further rich material in the coming weeks and months," he added.

Motorola said the new mobile service will initially launch in the UK before being made available in four Germany, Italy, Spain and France .
