A
mobile phone tracking service that enables friends and family to find out the whereabouts of the mobiles owner is set to launch in the
UK this week.
According to reports by the Daily Telegraph, the new service uses
mobile phone signals to locate friends and partners, regardless of where they are in the UK .
Called SNIFF (Social Network Integrated Friend Finder), the tracking service sends an
electronic map to the enquirer's mobile phone, giving the location to the nearest 100 metres.
The application, designed by Useful
Networks in the
US, will only be available to over-18s and those who gave their permission to be tracked.
If someone has already agreed to be tracked, they have the option to be made invisible for as long as they want.
The application will be accessible through the
Facebook and
MySpace social networking websites and across all the major mobile phone networks at a cost of 50p for each searching
text .
SNIFF will be the first Facebook application to apply premium charges to customers' mobile bills .
The service has been running in
Sweden for several months, where it has become an instant hit with more than 80,000 people signed up to use it.
