Online Sales Of Stolen Mobiles Reaches GBP2.6 Billion

Mon, 02 Jun 2008

An estimated £2.6 billion worth of stolen mobile phones are being put up for sale online in the UK .

New research by stolen property checking service CheckMEND has revealed an increase in such criminal activity is being driven by "faceless" selling on the growing range of online classified and auction websites such as eBay and the increasingly popular range of social networks .

The company, which uses data to check each week on the legitimacy of property by the majority of UK police forces, said 67 per cent of all the enquiries carried out over the past eighteen months were to check on a mobile handset’s IMEI number.

Since launching in 2006, CheckMEND has carried out 10 million checks with the most mobile phones being the most common item, followed iPods, Laptops, PCs, bikes, TVs, cameras and games consoles.

Adrian Portlock, CheckMEND Managing Director, commented: "It is beginning to be understood that this system allows the police to identify stolen consumer goods quickly and easily, and exposes buyers to possible confiscation of the property and prosecution."
