In-flight mobile phone calls coming soon

Fri, 28 Mar 2008

According to recent reports in the mobile phones news, making a mobile phone call whilst flying could soon be allowed. Those passengers flying on UK airlines could soon be able to use their mobile phones to make calls whilst in the air.

The communications regulator in the UK, Ofcom, has provided the all-clear for new systems to be integrated into the design of British planes that makes it safe for domestic passengers to make calls and receive text messages .

However, the procedure just needs to go through a couple of clearing checks before you can give your parents a ring as you fly over their house.

Ofcom reportedly commented in a statement: "The safety of passengers is paramount and mobile systems on aircraft will only be installed when they have secured approval by EASA and the CAA in the UK. If such approval has been secured, it will be a matter for individual airlines to judge whether there is consumer demand for these services."
