Cambridge Top For Mobile Phone Crime

Mon, 12 May 2008

Cambridge has been named as the UK’s top location for mobile phone theft and fraud .

According to a new study by life assistance business CPP, Cambridge is officially Britain’s hotspot for mobile phone crime, followed by Leicester, London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sheffield - all of which registered more than 10 per cent of residents as victims to mobile phone theft .

The CPP research also highlighted how women and young people are most at risk, with 20 per cent of all 16-24 year-olds found to have had their phones stolen or been victim to fraud .

Manchester, Liverpool, Southampton and Newcastle made up the list of top ten UK cities for mobile phone theft and fraud, while pubs and clubs were listed as the most popular hunting grounds for mobile phone thieves.

Commenting on the findings, John Walkley, head of mobile phone security at CPP Phonesafe, said: "The constantly high rate of mobile phone theft reflects the fact that Britons are still not doing enough to protect their valuables."

"It is important to remember that your mobile phone is worth more than its retail price. Once stolen, fraudsters can use all the information it carries and engage in criminal activities ."
