Mobile users are no longer able to buy the
iPhone following an announcement by
Apple that the
handset is out of stock at the companys online stores in both the
UK and the
US .
Over the weekend, Apples online stores in both the US and the UK listed the 8GB and 16GB models of the handset as "currently unavailable", following last weeks reports of stock shortages on both models from the
Carphone Warehouse and
O2 - the UKs exclusive service provider for the iPhone .
The news has fuelled speculation that Apple could be close to launching its next-generation
3G model of the iPhone .
Apple
chief executive Steve Jobs is widely expected to unveil first details of the much-hyped 3G iPhone during his keynote speech at the Worldwide Developers Conference next month.
The iPhone's first
anniversary on 29 June is being touted by some industry experts as a possible date for the release of the much-hyped 3G version.
But despite the enormous hype surrounding both models, recent
price cuts have led to suggestions that iPhone sales are falling short of
company expectations.
Last month Apple announced worldwide shipments of 1.7 million iPhones for the second quarter, bringing in just under £200m - a fraction of the company's overall revenues of £3.9bn.
