Major software company Microsoft have launched a fresh new initiative to enable mobile phones more affordable in developing countries. Similar to the one laptop one child scheme, the mobile phones initiative is a step up of a scheme called Fone+.
The project will be handled by a special division of Microsoft called the unlimited potential group they focus on developing nations. The aim of the group will be to bring mobile technology to rural populations throughout the world.
Craig Mundie, chief strategy officer at Microsoft, made it clear that mobile phones were much more than simple communication devices, and could instead replace a laptop with their capability.
Mundie was reported as commenting: "We continue to explore and look at both phone-up models and PC-down models as we look for the right devices for emerging markets ."
