Mobile phone users in the UK are sending an average 60 million more text messages per day than they did this time last year day, figures by the Mobile Data Association (MDA) have revealed.
According to the MDA, which represents the mobile telecoms industry, the 38 per cent increase equates to roughly 217 million messages per day, and more than 6.5 billion texts per month.
In addition, it was found that the number of picture and video-based messages sent by Brits is up by 20 per cent on the same quarter last year, with almost 1.5 million sent every day.
The MDA cited the inexpensive text message bundles now offered by most network providers and an increase in the number of easy to use mobile handsets and applications as major factors behind the growth in mobile messaging .
Steve Reynolds, Chairman of the MDA, said the figures "highlight the UK's continued enthusiasm and appetite for mobile phones ".
"The mobile landscape is constantly evolving. New mobile phones with easy to use software and creative tariffs from the mobile networks are encouraging people of all ages to use more of their functionality - from music, video and pictures to email communications and now GPS and mapping on the move."
He added: "The mobile phone has evolved far beyond simple voice and text messaging. It sits at the centre of our lives at home and at work ."
