Ofcom Calls For Public Feedback On Mobile Phone Industry Overhaul

Tue, 02 Sep 2008

Communications regulator Ofcom is to launch a campaign that will allow UK mobile phone users to have a say on all issues regarding the current mobile phone market and how it can be improved.

The watchdog hopes to help shape the regulatory future of the sector by capturing "different points of view" from the nation’s mobile users.

Ofcom said the consultation will look at a range of mobile issues and ways in which they can be improved, such as 2G and 3G coverage, the length of contracts, mobile broadband and pay as you go (PAYG) services .

The company is also interested in comments concerning the so called "mobile termination rates" - the price phone companies charge each other to access one another’s networks .

According to Ofcom, the number of mobile phones currently being used in Britian – some 70 million plus – exceeds the number of UK residents, while the number of calls from mobiles is set to overtake those from landlines by 2010.

But while more than 90 per cent of all mobile phone users in the UK are said to be happy, there's an overwhelming number of users - representing roughly 7 million contracts - that are either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with their service provider.

Ed Richards, Ofcom’s chief executive, said: "Mobile communication is now a central feature of modern life. As our flourishing mobile sector evolves, we want to help maintain strong competition and innovation alongside consumer protection."

"With significant market and technology developments under way, now is the right time to ask some tough questions about the future approach to regulation ."

The consultation will close on the 6th of November 2008 and interested parties can respond by either email, post or by visiting Ofcom’s ‘Mobile citizens, mobile consumer’ online blog - www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/msa08/
