UK Release Of Nokia N96 To Feature BBC IPlayer

Mon, 08 Sep 2008

Nokia’s new N96 smartphone handset is set to launch in the UK equipped with BBC’s popular iPlayer, thanks to a new partnership between the broadcaster and the mobile phones giant.

The Nokia N96, which will be available to UK customers from 1st October, will be the first handset to offer users on-air iPlayer services.

Owners of Nokia’s new flagship Nseries device will be able to download and stream their favourite programmes broadcasted from the BBC over the past seven days for free - via a built-in application that supports both 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Once stored on the phone, they will have one week to watch the downloads before they are automatically wiped from the phone’s memory.

The BBC services are currently available on other handheld devices, such as the iPhone and the iTouch, but for streaming purposes only, which means that people can only view the programmes if they are in a Wi-Fi or 3G area.

Nokia’s managing director Simon Ainslie said: "The Nokia N96 is going to provide a gateway to quality viewing on the move and will raise the bar for mobile screen and audio entertainment ."

Launched last year, the iPlayer has proved hugely popular. According to the BBC, more than 20 million programmes were watched through the service in August alone.
