Government Funding To Assist Mobile Crime Police

Wed, 08 Apr 2009

UK Police have received a £250,000 funding boost from the Home Office to help tackle mobile phone crime more efficiently.

The extra funding will be used to link the Police National Computer (PNC) to the National Mobile Phone Register (NMPR), making it quicker and easier for officers to check if a phone has been registered as stolen from its rightful owner.

Integrating the database with the PNC will also mean officers will be able to track down registered phones with just one call over a police radio.

An average of 25,000 police searches of the NMPR are carried out every month by police forces across the country, with roughly 25 per cent of searches resulting in the police obtaining vital information that could result in the retrieval of a stolen mobile handset .

In addition, the National Mobile Phone Crime Unit is also working with the Home Office to build safeguards to develop new protection for m-commerce, as mobile phones are increasingly being used for banking, shopping and payments.

Announcing the scheme, Home Office Minister Alan Campbell said: "By working closely with the mobile phone industry we have already put in place measures to make it harder for thieves to profit from mobile phone theft ."

"Around 90 per cent of handsets reported stolen are now blocked within 24 hours of reporting. This reduces their value and the incentive for thieves to steal."

Campbell added: "The rapidly developing nature of mobile technology means that we must continue to work together to eliminate any future opportunities for criminals to profit from mobile theft ."
