Samsung Unveils First Google Android Phone

Samsung Electronics has unveiled the I7500 – its first handset to use Google’s Android- operating system .

Due to be released in major European markets in June, the Samsung I7500 features a 3.2-inch AMOLED full touchscreen, a 5-megapixel camera, 8GB of internal memory and up to 32GB of external memory.

Full web browsing is provided through WiFi connectivity and 7.2Mbps HSDPA and users also get have access to a range of Google services, such as Google Search, Google Talk and YouTube .

In addition, an integrated GPS receiver enables the use of Google Maps features, such as My Location, Google Latitude, Street View, local search and detailed route description.

J K Shin, executive vice president and head of mobile communications at Samsung, said: "Samsung is among the earliest members of the Open Handset Alliance and has been actively moving forward to introduce the most innovative Android mobile phone ."

"With Samsung's accumulated technology leadership in the mobile phone industry, and our consistent strategy to support every existing operating system, I believe that Samsung provides the better choices and benefits to our consumers."

The latest Samsung smartphone joins the two Android-based handsets already on the market from HTC - the T-Mobile G1 and the upcoming HTC Magic on Vodafone – with more to follow.

However, Samsung claims to be the first of the major handset manufacturers – Nokia, LG, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and Samsung - to launch an Android-based phone .
