A Quarter Of Brits Own More Than One Mobile

Mon, 24 Aug 2009

Some 10 million Britons have multiple mobile phone contracts or handsets in order to get the latest phone or best deal, according to new research.

A study carried out by Opinium Research for price comparison site Moneysupermarket.com found that more than three million Brits fork out for multiple mobile contracts and one in four own more than two handsets.

Eight per cent of the 2002 mobile users polled said they had signed up to a second contract because it was the only way to get the texts and minutes they needed at a cheap price, while six per cent revealed they had done so in a bid to get their hands on the latest must-have handset.

A further 13 per cent cited 'privacy' reasons as their main motivation for owning a second mobile phone .

James Parker, manager of mobiles at Moneysupermarket.com, said: "Mobiles have become an integral bit of kit and are seen as an essential accessory for most Brits, so much so that many people seem to need multiple handsets and contracts".

"Whether it is to boast the latest technology or even to hide incriminating texts away from a partner, people have no qualms about buying more than one handset or signing up to several contracts."

He added: "A worrying aspect of the research is that despite the choice on the market, millions of people feel they have to sign up to multiple deals to get the best value for money."

"There are thousands of deals available that suit all kind of user habits, whether a talker, a texter, a downloader or combinations of the three, so consumers should check what their monthly usage is and shop around for the best deal to match their requirements."
