Brits Prefer Mobiles To Chocolate, Alcohol And Sex

Wed, 19 Aug 2009

A new study has highlighted just how dependent Britons are on their mobile phones, with eight out of ten UK residents unable to go more than a day without access to their handset .

The research, carried out by communications provider Lumison, revealed that ten per cent of 1,000 mobile phone users polled could not go more than five minutes without using their mobile, while 18 per cent could only go an hour and 16 per cent couldn’t make it past four hours.

Furthermore, 62 per cent of respondents said they would rather give up chocolate than surrender their phone, 23 per cent said they would give up alcohol and 8 per cent would go without sex.

"Brits are now hugely reliant upon technology to stay in touch with friends, colleagues, contacts and business associates. But this brings it own complexity," said: Aydin Kurt-Elli, CEO of Lumison,

"The mobile is clearly the device of choice for many, but ever-more powerful devices mean people are now using their mobiles for much more than voice calls of text ."

The Lumison study also revealed that email has taken over from the more traditional mail-by-post, with 62 per cent of Brits claiming not to have posted a letter in the last month, and 19 per cent saying they have gone more than five years without going to a post box.

"There is a vast array of ways in which people want to be contacted and how and when they choose to contact people, added Kurt-Elli.

"We just need to make sure all this technology is joined up, because missed calls or unread emails can cost money in lost opportunities."
