Mobile phones are fast replacing traditional alarm clocks, with new research revealing more than half of Brits are now using their mobile handset to wake them up.
A survey of 1,500 people, carried out by Rightmobilephone.co.uk, found that 52 per cent had used their mobile as an alarm clock .
Of these, a fifth said they use their phone to get them out of bed each morning, meaning as a wake-up call, the mobile is more popular than other modern alarms such as the Sonic Bomb, which shakes the sleeper, and dawn simulators, which turn the lights on gradually.
Neil McHugh, co-managing director of Rightmobilephone.co.uk said: "The mobile phone now plays a larger more important role in our lives."
" Phones have evolved from simple communication handsets to now provide us with a wealth of information on the go and schedule our social occasions."
He added: "The advances in mobile technology may in the near future threaten such traditional stand alone devices such as cameras, music players and alarm clocks ."
Robert Egan, of the British Horological Institute, said the findings were "just another sign of modern technology taking over from mechanical things".
The traditional alarm clock, which charts its origins back to Ancient China, has been used to help get people to work on time for 150 years.
