Northern Ireland Top For Mobile Phone Usage

Mon, 17 Aug 2009

People in Northern Ireland are more likely to use mobile phones than any other region in the UK, according to new research by communications regulator Ofcom .

A survey by the watchdog found that 93 per cent of the country’s population currently own a mobile phone, four per cent higher than the average for the rest of the UK (89 per cent) and up by eight per cent from last year’s figures.

It also revealed that people in Northern Ireland are more likely to rely on their mobile handset for making and receiving calls than elsewhere in the UK, with 52 per cent using them as their primary means of telecommunication compared to the overall UK average of 38 per cent.

According to the research, mobile phone ownership in rural households has grown from 84 per cent to 94 per cent over the last twelve months, while residents of Ulster are the least likely in Britain to cut back on mobile phone spending.

Ofcom also discovered that some 81 per cent of Northern Ireland’s mobile users would prefer to keep their existing handset rather than upgrade this year, compared to a UK average of 70 per cent.

Denis Wolinski, Ofcom's director in Northern Ireland, said the findings show the country "now leads the UK for mobile use".

"We're also more likely here to own one and more likely to use it than our home phone, and less likely to cut back on using it than people elsewhere in the UK," he added.
